HELP KEEP YOUR COMMUNITY SAFE: JOIN BLOCK WATCH

Block Watch is a citizen-driven, community based program designed to prevent and reduce crimes such as break and enters, auto theft and vandalism.  Block Watch encourages members of the community to increase their awareness of activities within the community and reporting of suspicious activities.

Block Watch operates on the premise that the police cannot be everywhere all the time, as a result they are unable to effectively investigate, reduce and prevent crime by themselves.

Therefore, in order to keep Chestermere a safe community, the police require the assistance of all citizens in identifying and reporting suspicious or criminal activities.

Block Watch is successful in preventing and reducing crime when people get involved and stay involved.  Chestermere is hoping to establish a Block Watch Association that is responsible for implementing, coordinating and managing the effectiveness of the Block Watch Program in all areas of the community.

Block Watch is not a huge a time commitment.   Members will receive a short orientation seminar and after that is completed will simply be asked to be more aware of suspicious activities in their community and to report them to police.  The Block Watch program also requires a Coordinator and Block Captians that will have additional responsibilities such as organization and promotion of the program in Chestermere.

Block Watch can succeed only if it is well organized and supported by a majority of community members.  The more people involved the more effective the program will be.

Education, information, increased awareness, citizen involvement and action are the key components for ensuring a safe, crime-free community.

The Goals of the Block Watch Program are as follows:

*Reduce crime in your neighbourhood through the active participation of the majority of the community residents.

*Increase the reporting to police of suspicious and criminal activities.

*Promote a safe and strong community.

If you are interested in getting involved in this Crime Prevention Program, please contact  Jody Nakoneshny at 273-2267.

Also, the PACT system (Police and Community Telephone) is part of Block Watch.
The link for signing up  for PACT would be www.calgarypolice.ca, under "Sections & Units" menu, select "Crime Prevention Unit" and select the "About PACT" link.

Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society

Every year there are tens of thousands of residents of Alberta who become victims of crime and other misfortune.  They are victims of residential break-ins, armed robberies, assaults and property  offenses.  Some of these victims are injured in motor vehicle collisions or involved in family violence.  Some are runaways or suicide attempts, while others are bereaved by the loss of a loved one.  The human cost of the suffering of these victims is staggering.

A joint police/community steering committee was formed in Strathmore in 1996 with the goal to establish a victim services unit for the communities served by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Detachments of Strathmore and Gleichen.  This initiative was established along the guidelines of Alberta's Departments of Justice police-based victims services unit model.  The Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society is also a member of the Alberta Police Based Victim Services Association (APBVSA)

The Goals and Objectives of the Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society (SRVSS) are to operate 24 hours a day and to provide immediate short-term support, information and referral to victims of crime, tragedy and disaster upon referral from Strathmore and Gleichen RCMP detachments.  This program also incorporates a public awareness/communication strategy with he goal of providing a public education plan to reduce revictimization.  We also do court preparations, court accompaniments and support with victims of crime and tragedy working closely with the Crown Prosecutor's office.  Following individuals through the criminal justice system from the time of an incident right up to court provides victims with continuity, support and trust.

A Board of Directors of community volunteers manages the Unit.  The Unit's daily operation is carried out by a Program Coordinator.  Trained Advocates who are volunteers from the community provide 24 hour service on the front-line and at street-level to victims of crime, tragedy and disaster.

Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society is in need of community members to serve as Advocates.  A comprehensive training is provided to selected applicants with a certificate awarded to those that complete the training modules set out by the Alberta Solicitor General.  If you feel that you can spare some of your valuable time and lend a compassionate and caring hand to other members of your community, or would like more information about our services, please contact Victim Services through the RCMP Detachment at (403) 934-7025.

POLICE AND COMMUNITY TELEPHONE SYSTEM (PACT)

The Police and Community Telephone System (PACT) is a program administered by the Calgary Police Service and fully funded by Encana Corporation. The program is a free service that involves a computerized, automated phone dialer. Once activated, it will simultaneously and automatically call subscribers and play a pre-recorded message. If no one is home at the time of the call, the message will be left on an answering machine. Under normal circumstances, these messages are sent between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm.

The majority of messages sent out by the Calgary Police Service are regarding crime trends in their community. Messages are also sent reminding residents of important Block Watch meetings. Sometimes PACT is used to enlist the residents in solving a serious crime or in finding a missing person.

The PACT program was expanded in 1997 to include rural residents in outlying communities AS LONG AS THEY HAVE A LOCAL CALLING NUMBER. Rural residents within local calling areas receive periodic messages sent either by their R.C.M.P. detachments or rural crime watch groups.

The Municipal District of Rocky View Fire Service has joined the umbrella of the PACT program and will start sending messages to rural residents about fire bans and fire trends.

If you are a Municipal District of Rocky View or Village of Irricana resident and are NOT CURRENTLY A MEMBER OF PACT and would like to join, you may call (403) 645-2990 or register online HERE.
